I love this book, despite what some GoodReads people say.
The book follows the main character Kira, who lost her dad to beasts and was born crippled with a twisted leg. She also lost her mom early on in the book. She has nowhere to go, no one to take care of her, and is deemed worthless by others around her. In the society she lives in, people fend for themselves and are not concerned about others, there are many secrets and just other terrible things.
I will say no more about what happens next, so I do not spoil it for anyone.
One thing I did want to hit on is how in this book Kira has been told countless times she is crippled, no one would want to marry her, and that she is worthless. Some people go as far as saying she should have been left in the Field when she was born. She is aware people think this of her but does not let it diminish how she sees herself. I found myself relating to her, and it brought back a memory when I first one of my peers I was adopted. The words were “I am so sorry” and at that moment, I knew what shame felt like. I was worried other people in my society would think or say. But as Kira shows and demonstrates, is that while there be things society may label as bad, it does not mean we are less.
The thing society may try to use against us, can actually be of help to others around us.
